Congratulations to GoA’s Chairman Mr. Li Lu For Being Inducted as a Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) held a virtual Induction Ceremony on October 7th, where Mr. Li Lu, Chairman of Guardians of the Angeles Charitable Foundation, was formally inducted as a member of the Academy under its “Business, Corporate and Philanthropic Leadership” Section.

(The Induction Ceremony was held virtually due to pandemic.

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences is one of the oldest learned societies in the United States. Founded in 1780 by John Adams, John Hancock and other Founding Fathers of the United States, the Academy is dedicated to honoring excellence and leadership, working across disciplines and divides, advancing the common good, and, as described in its charter, “to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people.”

The Academy has elected more than 13,500 members since its founding in 1780, recognizing world leaders in the arts and sciences, business, philanthropy, and public affairs, including such notables as Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso, Charles Darwin, as well as former U.S. president Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Out of the 275 selected members this year, seven are Chinese Americans.

Mr. Li Lu, Chairman of Himalaya Capital and a Caltech trustee, is not only a successful investor and hedge fund manager with US$10 billion in capital under management, but also a long-time philanthropist and activist. He attended Columbia University, where he received three degrees simultaneously: B.A. in Economics from Columbia College, J.D. from Columbia Law School, and M.B.A. from Columbia Business School. Mr. Li  won the John Jay Award from Columbia College, the Raoul Wallenberg Human Rights Awards from the Congressional Human Rights Foundation, and the Reebok Human Rights Award. He is featured in the Family of Voices, a part of the ongoing twenty-year Exhibition, starting in 2017, “Many Voices, One Nation” at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. He is the author of “Moving The Mountain–My Life in China” and “Civilization, Modernization, Value Investing, and China” (in Chinese 2020).

In January 2020, Mr. Li Lu co-founded the Guardians of the Angeles Charitable Foundation (“GoA”) to combat the global COVID-19 crisis and now serves as its Chairman of the Board. He has led the organization to raise over US$4 million in its funding and to provide financial relief and medical supplies with US$5 million market value to date in aid of the healthcare and frontline workers both at home and overseas. GoA’s financial awards went to 11 outstanding healthcare professionals working on the frontline and its PPE donation covered over 100 hospitals in Hubei, China, where the outbreak first began.

Since COVID-19 cases started to surge in the U.S. in March, GoA leveraged its PPE supply chain network in China and pivoted its resources towards helping the U.S. As of today, GoA has donated over 2.3 million PPE to more than 200 organizations across 31 states. Thanks to Mr. Li Lu’s introduction, BYD Company, an auto-maker turned mask manufacturer and one of the very first suppliers with FDA EUA, became GoA’s most reliable mask supplier. Through partnerships with influential agencies that Mr. Li Lu and other board members connected GoA with, such as US Heartland China Association, Virus Relief, and dedicated logistics partners such as Polar Air Cargo and Xchange, GoA is able to deliver PPE assistance to the hardest hit regions and the disproportionately impacted minority communities in a timely manner.

(GoA PPE Donation in the U.S. as of September 23, 2020)

The U.S. recently reported more than 50,000 new cases on a daily basis, bringing the total number of cases to above 7.7 million, and the death toll stood at more than 214,000. GoA remains committed to continuing its support to nursing homes, hospitals and social agencies in dire need. As fall approaches, school districts across the nation are contemplating to reopen with disinfecting measures in place. GoA’s latest “Back to School” program is dedicated to providing students, teachers and school staff with necessary resources for safely returning to school and work.
